Veterinary Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)

Veterinary Hyperbaric Medicine Society (VHMS), USA position statement:

The use of HBOT has the potential to accelerate the normal healing process and thus the potential to enhance the health and welfare of animals.

Veterinary HBOT - Contraindications:


Absolute:
Pneumothorax
Pulmonary Bulla
Emphysema
Unconscious Patients

Relative:
* Asthma
* Chronic Sinusitis
* Congenital Spherocytosis
* Fever 
* Chronic aural infection / hx aural sx
* Seizure hx
* Optic Neuritis
* Pacemaker
* Pregnancy
* Thoracic sx
* Upper respiratory infections

Patient risk should be assessed if they are currently or have recently taken any of the following medications:

Doxorubicin (Adriamycin) – cardiotoxicity may occur
Cisplatinum – wound healing may be impaired
Disulfiram (Antabuse) – blocks the production of superoxide dismutase, which protects against Mafenide acetate (Sulfamylon) – wounds healing may be impaired.

Drug Interactions with HBOT
* Steroids: high doses predispose to O2 toxicity
* Narcotics: respiratory suppression
* Insulin: hypoglycemia
* Some chemotherapeutics: toxicity
